In a tight economy, it is becoming more and more important for job-seekers to improve their personal brand and one of the most effective ways to do this is with your resume. Your resume is often your only opportunity for employers to get a glimpse into what you can offer. It is vital that you showcase yourself in the best possible light to show employers how you can help the company.

Job-seekers should view their resume as a sales pitch; great sales people are able to listen and understand what their customers needs are, and they find the right product to fit them. They don’t lie or fabricate information; rather, they listen and understand what the customer is saying and find a way to fulfill their desires. In this case, you are the salesman and your customer is the business you are trying to get a position with. Make sure that you understand what the position entails and tailor your resume to fit those needs . And be honest with yourself if you don’t fit well in the position.

Also remember, anything that you can add that will distinguish you from the “pack” will get you in the door for an interview. Your resume is not the time for you to be shy.

For example:

Are you studying a new language?

Have you started your own blog?

Is cooking one of your hobbies?

The one huge mistake that job-seekers make is that they are shy about the things they have done and accomplished, or even worse, they over look the skills that come from being a stay-at-home mom (leadership, organization and multi-tasking) or from being a youth basketball coach (discipline, service and planning).

Often, the first step for people is to work backwards and determine what skills and keywords are highlighted in the job announcement. Then, job-seekers should ask whether they have the skills and how they can show these skills with their past experience.

Here are a few tips to ensure that your resume is polished, well read, and effectively sells your skills :

1. Don’t send a resume with errors. This screams lack of attention to detail. Employers will throw your resumé in the trash if they see an error.

2. Show your impact. One of the biggest shortcomings of resumés is that they don’t demonstrate what you did and the effect that you had on the company.

DON’T JUST PUT: “Sold 10,000 units” SAY: “Sold 10,000 units which led to a 5% increase and total sales and revenue for company XYZ”

This tells potential employers your overall impact on previous employers and what you can do for their company

3. Words! Words! Words! Ensure that you use key “power” words that attract employers. There are specific words to use for each industry, but saying “I achieved” rather than “I did” will get you closer to landing an interview. Some other power words include: evaluated, trained, rectified, dispensed, augmented, streamlined and arbitrated. However, beware of clichés

4. Cover all work experiences according to the position. For recent graduates without a lot of work experience this will include involvement in clubs or organizations. For seasoned job seekers, make sure you include any hobbies or skills that could be adaptable and used by the company. However, seasoned job seekers should have a focus for your resumé. It’s not an autobiography.

5. Keep it organized! Use headers (education, experience, accomplishments, skills, etc.) to your advantage to keep the resumé organized. If you use a chronological format, be sure to adhere to it throughout the entire resume. There are strengths and weaknesses to each format. Also, it is very important that your resumé looks organized and presentable.

6. “So What?“ For every accomplishment or skill that you place on your resumé, ask “so what?” or “why is that important?”. These questions will ensure that you are only placing relevant information on your resumé.

Happy job hunting!

Amazon Kindle

There is no doubt that technology is changing today’s society. However, some people feel that these changes are for the worse, especially when it comes to technology and the media. These people argue that the advent of computers and the internet will make traditional books and other paper reading materials, such as newspapers and magazines, obsolete. Rather than have the Washington Post or Vanity Fair delivered to their doorsteps, more people are choosing to read newspaper and magazines with a click of their mouse. As a result of the increased online readership, the newspaper and magazine industries are suffering and many people feel that the book industry is the next to go.

A new device by Amazon called the Kindle adds to the fears of traditional book readers. The Kindle is a small, hand-held computer that allows people to read books on a screen. It has its advantages; people no longer have to travel to bookstores, instead, simply order the book and it is sent to the Kindle in less than 60 seconds. This lightweight machine holds up to 1500 books, a feat that no backpack can accomplish. Also, the Kindle has a feature that allows it to read newspapers, magazines, blogs, and books out loud to you. It sounds wonderful, but would you really want to read War and Peace off of an eight inch screen? What happens if you drop it and break the screen–would you be willing to fork over another $300 for a new one? Though the Kindle sounds appealing, it is highly unlikely to pose a real threat to the publishing industry.
